Which DNA test to take and why — from a working genealogist who uses these tools for client research. No affiliate scoreboard. Just what actually works for what you're trying to learn.
If you want the quick version: most people should start with AncestryDNA — largest database, best cousin matching, most useful for building a family tree. Add FamilyTreeDNA later if you want to trace deep paternal (Y-DNA) or maternal (mtDNA) lines. MyHeritage is worth adding if your family is European. The rest of this guide is why.
The three kinds of DNA test
Most articles about DNA testing skip the part that matters most: there are three fundamentally different tests, and they answer three different questions. Buying the wrong one is the most common mistake in this space. So before we compare companies, let's get the vocabulary straight.
Autosomal DNA
Reads DNA from both your parents' sides. Reliable for finding cousins up to about the 5th-cousin range, roughly 5–7 generations back.
Every major consumer test uses this. Best for cousin matching, building a family tree, ethnicity estimates, and finding biological family.
Y-DNA
Passed father to son, unchanged, for thousands of years. Traces your direct paternal line — your father's father's father, and so on.
Only biological males can take this test (women don't have a Y chromosome). Best for surname research and deep-time ancestry.
mtDNA
Passed from mothers to all children, unchanged, for thousands of years. Traces your direct maternal line — your mother's mother's mother.
Anyone can take this test. Best for deep-time maternal-line research; less useful for recent genealogy than the other two.
When someone says "DNA test," they almost always mean the autosomal test — that's what Ancestry, 23andMe, and MyHeritage all sell as their main product. Y-DNA and mtDNA are specialist tools, mostly offered by FamilyTreeDNA, and useful when you have a specific question the autosomal test can't answer.
Choose the test that fits your question.
Rather than starting with "which company is best," start with what you're actually trying to learn. Here's how the goals map to tests:
You want to find biological family
Adoption search, unknown parentage, or a mystery in the family tree. Start with AncestryDNA. It has the largest database (more than 25 million people tested), which means the highest chance of finding close matches — half-siblings, first cousins, second cousins. Once you have your results, upload them to MyHeritage (free), FamilyTreeDNA (free), and GEDmatch (free) to widen the net further. This is not the moment to save money — go where the people are.
You want to build a family tree
Same answer: AncestryDNA, and it's not close. Their platform integrates DNA matches with billions of historical records — census pages, birth certificates, ship manifests — into a single research workflow. If you're going to be building a tree over years, this is where you want to work.
You want to know your ethnicity mix
Any autosomal test will give you this, and all of them are approximate — they compare your DNA to reference populations, and the results shift as the reference databases improve. AncestryDNA and MyHeritage both do this well; 23andMe has historically had the most granular breakdown. Just remember these are estimates, not passports.
You want to trace your deep paternal ancestry
This is FamilyTreeDNA's home turf. Their Big Y-700 test traces your Y-chromosome back tens of thousands of years, identifying the specific paternal lineage (haplogroup and subclades) that your father's father's line belongs to. Useful for surname research, connecting to distant cousins with the same paternal line, and for the "where did my direct paternal ancestors come from before written history" question.
You want to trace your deep maternal ancestry
Also FamilyTreeDNA. Their full mtDNA sequence traces your direct maternal line back tens of thousands of years — mother's mother's mother's mother, and so on. Less genealogically actionable than Y-DNA (since surnames typically change on female lines), but still the definitive test for deep maternal research.
You want dual citizenship support
Important honest note: DNA tests alone don't establish citizenship eligibility. European consulates (Italy, Ireland, Germany, Poland, etc.) require documentary proof — vital records, church registers, naturalization papers. DNA can support a paper trail but rarely substitutes for it. If citizenship is your goal, invest in document recovery first, and use DNA only if it helps confirm a specific relationship in the chain.
You have Ashkenazi Jewish, Irish, or endogamous ancestry
Populations that intermarried heavily over centuries produce complicated match results — everyone shows up as a distant cousin because everyone shares distant ancestors. In these cases, both AncestryDNA (largest overall) and MyHeritage (strong European Jewish coverage) should be used together. Living DNA has particular strength for British Isles ancestry.
The five major companies.
Reviewed in order of how often we recommend them to clients for genealogy work — with honest notes on the tradeoffs each one comes with.
The default choice for most genealogy work. With over 25 million tested users, AncestryDNA has by far the largest DNA database in the world — which means the highest odds of finding meaningful cousin matches. It integrates directly with Ancestry.com's historical records (billions of documents), and the tree-building tools are the best in the industry. Ethnicity estimates are reasonably granular and updated regularly.
The tradeoffs: A full Ancestry.com subscription (records access) costs extra on top of the DNA test — expect $25–40/month if you want to do serious research. The platform has historically been slow to release raw DNA data (though this has improved), and their algorithms sometimes surface distant matches that turn out to be errors. Still, this is where most family history journeys start, and there's a reason.
The only lab offering all three test types — autosomal, Y-DNA, and mtDNA — which makes FTDNA irreplaceable for professional-level research. Their Big Y-700 test is the gold standard for paternal line research; nothing else in consumer DNA testing comes close. They also accept raw DNA transfers from other companies (Ancestry, 23andMe, MyHeritage) for free basic matching, which is useful.
The tradeoffs: Their autosomal database is smaller than AncestryDNA's, so casual users often see fewer close matches. The interface feels dated compared to modern platforms. But for anyone serious about surname research, Y-DNA studies, or deep maternal lineage, FTDNA is not optional — it's the only tool that does the job.

The go-to for European ancestry. MyHeritage has the strongest international database of the major players, particularly for Eastern Europe, Scandinavia, and the Mediterranean. Their ethnicity estimates for European regions tend to be more granular than competitors. They recently transitioned to whole-genome sequencing, which raises the analytical ceiling of what their kit can reveal over time.
The tradeoffs: Their record collection is weaker than Ancestry's for US genealogy. Advanced features (Theory of Family Relativity, chromosome browser) require a paid subscription. Excellent for the diaspora who came from Europe; less compelling if all your ancestors landed at Ellis Island and stayed put.
Strong on ethnicity and health, complicated on stability. 23andMe pioneered consumer genetic testing and still delivers the most granular ethnicity breakdown (200+ regions), plus optional health reports covering genetic predispositions and carrier status. Their haplogroup reporting is decent, and the trait reports are fun even if not scientifically rigorous.
The tradeoffs: After a major data breach in 2023 and bankruptcy proceedings in early 2025, 23andMe now operates under new ownership with new security measures — but the situation raises real long-term stability and privacy questions. For pure genealogy work, we typically point clients elsewhere; if you specifically want the health reports, this is still the strongest option, but consider the tradeoffs carefully.
Specialty player with British Isles focus. Living DNA offers a detailed regional breakdown for the UK and Ireland that other tests don't — down to individual regions of England, Scotland, Wales, and Ireland. Their kit includes basic Y and mtDNA haplogroup reporting alongside autosomal. Smaller database than the major players, but they accept transfers from other companies.
The tradeoffs: Small autosomal database means limited cousin matches. Their strengths only really shine if you have known British or Irish ancestry and want to know precisely which region. Otherwise, MyHeritage covers similar ground with a bigger network.

What to do after your results arrive.
Most people take a DNA test, look at the ethnicity pie chart for five minutes, and then never come back. That's a waste of what you paid for. The ethnicity estimate is the least useful part of what you just bought. The cousin matches are the whole point.
Transfer your raw data to other databases
Once you have results from one company, upload the raw DNA file to as many other services as you can — most accept transfers for free basic matching, sometimes with paid upgrades. The critical ones to transfer to are MyHeritage, FamilyTreeDNA, and GEDmatch (a free third-party tool that lets you compare with people who tested at any company). More databases means more chances to find meaningful matches.
Build your tree, even a starter one
DNA matches are only useful if you know how you're related, and that means having at least a basic family tree. Start with what you know — parents, grandparents, great-grandparents — and let your matches help you fill in the rest. Ancestry has the best integrated tree tools, but the tree can live anywhere.
Message your close matches
Second and third cousins with visible trees are often willing to compare notes. A short, respectful message ("Hi, I'm your DNA match on Ancestry — I'm researching the Smith line from Ohio, is this a familiar name?") gets a surprising number of useful responses. Distant matches (5th cousin or further) are less productive unless you're deep into methodical research.
Consider a specialist test if you hit a wall
If you've worked through autosomal matches and hit a brick wall on a specific line, that's when Y-DNA (for a paternal wall) or mtDNA (for a maternal wall) can help. This is the moment to add FamilyTreeDNA to your kit.
